The 33rd Edition of the Trinidad and Tobago International Marathon is now behind us, but 2015 was not the same as in recent years.  There was something special. The spectators waited with baited breath for Mr. Brian Lewis, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) to arrive at the finish line after walking the full marathon as one of the 3:30 am starters.  His objective, to raise awareness about the Elite Athlete Preparation Fund #10golds24; and to provide for the athletes the necessary services for them to produce the performances that are expected of them and enable Trinidad and Tobago to capture 10 gold medals by 2024. Brian’s great effort almost took away the attention from the winners of the marathon, Juan Carlos Cardona Rios of Colombia who completed the distance in 2 hrs 21.20 in fine weather; and for the female category, Truphena Busienei of Kenya, taking the crown on her first visit to Trinidad and Tobago, in a time of 2 hrs 55.07. Rios and Busienei out ran second placers Hillary Kipchirchir Kimaiyo of Kenya (2hrs 22:11), 2014 champion and Monica Gonzalez of Colombia (2 hrs 58:12). Mark Chepses of Kenya (2 hrs 22:17) and Leah Kigen of Kenya, the 2014 female winner grabbed the third places.

The race was filled with milestones, as the Late Dana Seetahal, runner and legal giant was honoured in this year’s event. Christine Regis first Trinidad and Tobago local female received the Dana Seetahal / Mapau Challenge Trophy and $5,000 for her efforts in completing the marathon in 3 hrs 19:58 to place fourth among the women. Her compatriot, the veteran Curtis Cox placed a creditable seventh in a time of 2 hrs 48:47 to claim the honour of first local male. The marathon village in the Queen’s Park Savannah, the largest round-a-bout in the world, came alive with a warm ambience of the many experiences being expressed on race morning. Precision Timing International provided the results which can be found on the site. We look forward to many of you visiting us for another great experience in 2016 when the 5k will be back on the schedule.
